A good jitter score for VoIP is generally below 30 milliseconds (ms). A result below 15 ms is excellent and provides the strongest margin for consistent business call quality.

At 30 ms or higher, you may begin to experience choppy audio, distorted voices, missing words or brief periods of silence. A result of 50 ms or higher deserves attention, especially if employees or customers are already noticing problems during calls.

Jitter is only one part of VoIP call quality, however. Latency, packet loss, available bandwidth and network congestion also matter. A good jitter result does not automatically mean the entire connection is ready for reliable business calling.

The Common Misconception: Fast Internet Always Means Clear Calls

Many businesses assume that a fast internet plan guarantees good VoIP calls. Unfortunately, internet speed is only part of the equation.

A connection can deliver hundreds of megabits per second and still provide inconsistent voice quality. VoIP conversations are transmitted as a continuous stream of small data packets. Those packets must arrive steadily and in the correct order.

Downloading a file or loading a webpage can tolerate small variations in delivery time. A live phone conversation cannot. When voice packets arrive at uneven intervals, you may hear gaps, distortion or a robotic sound—even though an ordinary speed test reports plenty of bandwidth.

That variation in arrival time is called jitter.

What Does Jitter Mean?

Jitter measures how much the delay between data packets changes while they travel across a network.

Imagine that a VoIP phone sends one voice packet every 20 milliseconds. In ideal conditions, the receiving system gets those packets at the same steady interval.

On a connection with high jitter, one packet might arrive promptly, the next might be delayed and several others might arrive almost together. The average internet speed may still appear excellent, but the voice stream is no longer arriving smoothly.

VoIP phones and calling applications use a jitter buffer to briefly hold and reorder packets before playing the audio. This can correct small variations, but the buffer has limits. Packets that arrive too late may no longer be usable.

The result can include:

  • Robotic or distorted voices
  • Missing words and syllables
  • Short periods of silence
  • Audio that speeds up or slows down
  • Calls that sound worse during busy periods

What Is an Acceptable Jitter Level for VoIP?

Cisco recommends keeping jitter below 30 ms for high-quality voice and packet loss below 1%. Microsoft also identifies jitter below 30 ms as an important condition for optimal real-time voice performance.

The practical goal is not merely to pass a single test. It is to maintain low, stable jitter throughout the workday.

Why Does High Jitter Hurt VoIP Calls?

VoIP is a real-time service. The person on the other end of the call cannot wait several seconds while missing voice packets are retransmitted.

Websites, email and file downloads use methods that can resend lost information without the user noticing. Voice traffic normally prioritizes keeping the conversation moving. If packets arrive too late, the phone system may discard them instead of delaying the entire conversation.

This is why high jitter can sound similar to packet loss. The packets might eventually arrive, but if they arrive after the phone can use them, portions of the conversation can still be lost.

What Causes High Jitter?

Several different issues can create an inconsistent flow of voice packets.

Network congestion

Congestion occurs when more traffic is trying to use the connection than the network can handle smoothly.

Large cloud backups, file uploads, security-camera traffic, streaming video and software updates can compete with VoIP calls. Even a fast connection can experience momentary congestion when several demanding activities happen at once.

Wi-Fi interference

Wireless connections are more susceptible to interference, weak signals and competition between devices.

A laptop running a softphone from the opposite side of the building may have much less consistent performance than a desk phone connected directly to the network. Nearby wireless networks, walls and other electronic equipment can also affect Wi-Fi stability.

Inadequate network equipment

An aging router, overloaded firewall or improperly configured switch can delay packets inconsistently. Equipment may appear to work normally for ordinary internet use while struggling with real-time traffic during busy periods.

Missing or incorrect Quality of Service settings

Quality of Service, commonly called QoS, allows compatible network equipment to give voice traffic priority over less time-sensitive activity.

Without proper traffic prioritization, a large upload may be treated as equally important as a live customer call. Cisco’s VoIP guidance emphasizes that voice packets need appropriate priority to maintain consistent call quality.

Problems outside the local network

Not every jitter problem begins inside the office. Congestion or unstable routing can occur within the internet provider’s network or somewhere along the route between the business and its VoIP service.

Testing from multiple devices and at different times can help determine whether the issue is isolated or affects the entire location.

How Should You Test Jitter for VoIP?

How Can a Business Reduce High Jitter?

The correct solution depends on where the inconsistency originates, but common improvements include:

  • Connecting desk phones and important workstations through Ethernet
  • Improving wireless coverage for mobile and softphone users
  • Replacing outdated or overloaded routers and firewalls
  • Configuring QoS to prioritize VoIP traffic
  • Scheduling cloud backups and large uploads outside busy calling periods
  • Separating voice traffic from other network activity when appropriate
  • Checking switches, cabling and internet equipment for errors
  • Asking the internet provider to investigate an unstable connection
  • Using a secondary connection for failover when phone availability is critical

Simply purchasing a faster internet package will not correct every jitter problem. Additional bandwidth may help when congestion is the cause, but it will not necessarily fix Wi-Fi interference, faulty equipment, poor routing or incorrect network configuration.

A Simple Business Example

Consider an office with fast cable internet and 20 cloud phones.

When the office is quiet, its jitter result is 8 ms and calls sound clear. Later in the day, employees begin uploading large files while cloud backups and security cameras are also using the connection. Jitter rises to 48 ms, and customers report hearing broken or robotic audio.

The company does not necessarily need a different phone system. It may need its network traffic evaluated and voice packets properly prioritized.

This is why testing during real operating conditions is more valuable than relying only on the advertised speed of the internet plan.

Is Zero Jitter Possible?

A jitter score of exactly zero is not a realistic requirement for most business internet connections. Some variation is normal whenever traffic passes through multiple network devices and internet routes.

The objective is to keep jitter consistently low enough that employees and customers do not notice it. A stable result below 30 ms is generally more important than achieving a perfect result once.

Can High Jitter Cause Dropped Calls?

Jitter usually causes audio problems before it causes an entire call to disconnect. However, severe or prolonged network instability can contribute to dropped calls, especially when it occurs alongside packet loss or major latency spikes.

If calls are disconnecting completely, the investigation should include the internet connection, firewall, router, SIP configuration and VoIP service—not jitter alone.

Is Jitter More Important Than Internet Speed?

Both matter, but they measure different things.

Internet speed measures how much data the connection can transfer. Jitter measures how consistently that data arrives.

A business needs enough bandwidth for its simultaneous calls, but it also needs a stable connection. Once sufficient bandwidth is available, stability often becomes more important to call quality than purchasing additional raw speed.

Does Jitter Affect Video Meetings Too?

Yes. Video meetings, remote collaboration platforms, online gaming and other real-time applications can also be affected by high jitter.

The symptoms may include distorted audio, frozen video, delayed responses or sudden changes in picture quality. A business experiencing problems across both VoIP calls and video meetings may have a broader network-quality issue.
